Kegunaan aren dapat dirasakan secara langsung oleh masyarakat baik di dalam maupun di sekitar hutan melalui penggunaan secara tradisional. Produksi kolang-kaling masih sangat rendah disebabkan penerapan tingkat teknologi budidaya yang belum optimal. Salah satu hal yang perlu diperhatikan untuk mengantisipasi rendahnya produktifitas kolang kaling adalah penanganan pasca panen.Selama ini pengupasan buah aren yang telah direbus dilakukan secara manual menggunakan pisau atau sabit dengan bantuan tangan. Proses dalam pengerjaannya membutuhkan waktu yang cukup lama sehingga menghambat proses pasca panen. Menciptakan alat untuk mengupas buah aren hingga menjadi kolang kaling merupakan salah satu usaha yang dianggap penting karena dapat membatu mempercepat proses pengupasannya sehingga dapat menghematkan waktu dan meningkatkan produksi kolang kaling.Penelitian ini dimulai dengan karakteristik buah aren dan mempelajari proses pengupasan manual dengan menggunakan pisau. Selanjutnya dilakukan pembuatan konsep perancangan dan ditentukan pemilihan bahan kontruksi. Alat dan mesin yang digunakan pada pembuatan kontruksi, antara lain mesin gerinda, mesin bor, mesin bubut, mesin roll, mesin las listrik, meteran dan peralatan pendukung lainnya. Bahan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini antara lain menggunakan plat besi, besi UNP, poros, sistem transmisi, bantalan, puli, sabuk dan motor penggerak. Serta perancangan bentuk dan perhitungan dimesi mesin pengupas buah aren. Langkah berikutnya dilakukan pembuatan kontruksi mesin. Pada tahap ini dilakukan perhitungan dan pembuatan, tabung, dudukan roll, penggunaan poros dan penggunaan sistem trasmisi serta komponen-komponen pendukung lainya dan melakukan pengujian kenerja mesin.Mesin pengupas aren dirancang mengunakan motor bensin yang dapat bekerja dengan kapasitas besar dan hanya membutuhkan waktu yang singkat dalam proses pengupasannya. Proses perancangan mesin pengupasan buah aren ini dilakukan sedetil mungkin agar mesin yang dirancang tidak gagal dalam proses membuatan mesin pengupas buah aren ini. Mesin pengupas aren hasil rancangan ini terdiri dari beberapa bagian antara lain rangka, roll pengupas, sistem transmisi dan casing. Mesin pengupas buah aren ini bekerja dengan cara roll yang berputar dalam tabung yang digerakan oleh motor pengerak sehingga terjadi pengupasan dalam tabung. Hasil pengupasan menggunakan mesin hanya membutukan waktu rata-rata 2 menit/kg menit untuk menggupas 2 kg buah aren dengan kapasitas pengupasan mesin pengupas buah aren 1 kg/menit. Dengan diameter buah aren rata-rata 3,81 cm. Sedangkan untuk pengupasan manual membutuhkan waktu pengupasan 4 menit untuk 2 kg buah aren. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada 2013 dengan tiga kali sampling yaitu pada Maret, Mei, dan Juli mengikuti musim. Pengambilan sampel ikan menggunakan alat tangkap yang tidak selektif, yaitu langgian (hand operated scoop net). Hasil penelitian didapatkan 5 famili yang meliputi 21 spesies, dengan jumlah spesies terbesar berasal dari famili Cyprinidae (15 spesies). Beberapa spesies yang dominan adalah Labeobarbus leptocheilus dan Crossocheilus sp. Kondisi musim berpengaruh terhadap struktur komunitas ikan, dimana keanekaragaman dan kemerataan cukup tinggi terjadi pada musim hujan (Maret) dan peralihan (Mei) tetapi rendah pada musim kemarau (Juli). Pada akhir perlakuan, seluruh tikus dikorbankan secara dislocatio cervicalis. Selanjutnya, kauda duktus epididimis dinekropsi untuk dikoleksi spermatozoanya. Pemeriksaan kualitas spermatozoa, meliputi motilitas dan konsentrasi spermatozoa. Pemeriksaan konsentrasi testosteron serum darah dilakukan menggunakan teknik enzymelinked immunosorbant assay (ELISA). Motilitas dan konsentrasi (x10 6 ) spermatozoa pada kelompok K1; K2; K3; dan K4 masingmasing adalah 3,00±0,00; 3,20±0,28; 2,00±0,86; dan 3,20±0,28 dan 146,60±71,90; 187,80±60,80; 124,20±64,70; dan 129,40±27,07. Konsentrasi testosteron pada kelompok K1; K2; K3; dan K4 masing-masing adalah 5,53+1,75; 4,68+4,56; 2,51+1,33; dan 2,40+1,60 ng/ml. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian EVS mampu meningkatkan motilitas spermatozoa tetapi tidak memengaruhi konsentrasi spermatozoa dan testosteron serum darah tikus putih.
