Temperatur pemotongan mempunyai pengaruh besar terhadap umur pahat dan permukaan benda uji, Oleh karena itu dalam proses pemesinan temperatur mempunyai korelasi terhadap laju keausan pahat yang merupakan salah satu parameter dalam menentukan umur pahat tersebut. Dari uraian latar belakang dapat dirumuskan bahwa: (1)Proses pemotongan logam menghasilkan panas akibat gesekan antara pahat dengan benda kerja (2)Kedalaman potong mempengaruhi panas pada proses pembubutan yang terjadi pada mata pahat HSS dan benda uji. Adapun tujuan pada penelitian ini untuk mengetahui seberapa besar rambatan temperatur pada mata pahat HSS dan benda uji. Material yang digunkan pada penelitian ini adalah baja karbon sedang dengan menggunakan mata pahat HSS, jumlah benda uji yaitu 10 buah dengan ukuran ?2 Inci dan panjang 70 mm. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada 8 titik pengukuran dimana pada mata pahat HSS dan Mesin Bubut Knuth Compass Type 250/1000 B yang dipusatkan pada bed dan spindel yang merupakan bagian penting pada saat mesin berkerja. Pengujian pada titik 1-6 dilakukan pada saat benda kerja di bubut dan pada titik 7-8 dilakukan pada saat putaran spindel di hentikan, setelah itu mengukur temperatur pada setiap titik, alat ukur temperatur yang digunkan adalah thermocople type K dengan 8 chanel. Dari hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan dapat dilihat distribusi temperatur terhadap kedalaman makan pada proses bubut yaitu temperatur tertinggi pada proses pemakanan 2 mm tanpa menggunakan cairan pendingin sebesar 40,1 ? dan terendah pada kedalaman makan 0,1 mm sebesar 32,7 ?. Hasil peelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa cairan pendingin dapat menstabilkan distribusi temperatur. Kata kunci: Distribusi Temperatur, Pahat HSS, Baja Karbon Sedang.
