Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini mengkaji mengenai pengaruh sisipan katalis silika (SiO2) dalam MgH2 terhadap temperatur desorpsi untuk aplikasi material penyimpan hidrogen. Dengan tujuan memperbaiki karakteristik MgH2 yang memiliki temperatur operasional sangat tinggi yaitu 300-4000C dan waktu reaksi yang lambat sedangkan badan energi dunia telah mematok target temperatur dibawah 1000C dengan waktu reaksi sesingkat mungkin. Silika (SiO2) telah berhasil di ekstraksi dari abu sekam padi. Sampel MgH2+SiO2 di milling menggunakan metode mechanical alloying dengan alat ball milling selama 5 jam, rasio bola dengan serbuk 10:1 dan kecepatan 400 rpm, variasi sisipan katalis sebesar 1 wt%, 3wt% dan 5wt% SiO2 sampel total 1 gram. Hasil pengamatan dengan XRD menunjukkan material berhasil direduksi hingga skala nanokristal. Fasa yang muncul, dari hasil observasi XRD adalah fasa MgH2 sebagai fasa utama. SEM menunjukkan bahwa semakin bertambah variasi wt% SiO2 maka ukuran butir akan semakin halus sehingga terjadi peningkatan jumlah aglomerasi.
