Alternatif lain yang sering digunakan oleh masyarakat untuk mengobati penyakit akibat infeksi mikroorgamisme adalah obat-obat yang berasal dari tanaman herbal. Salah satu tanaman herbal yang memiliki kasiat antijamur adalah buah jamblang (Syzygium cumini). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Standart Plate Count (SPC) untuk melihat KHM dan KBM ekstrak buah jamblang terhadap pertumbuhan candida albicans. Buah jamblang diekstraksi dengan metode sokletasi dan dibuat pengenceran bervariasi yaitu 25, 50, 75, dan 100%. Candida albicans yang telah dikultur pada media SDA dipaparkan dengan ekstrak dan diinkubasi pada suhu 370C selama 48 jam. Hasil penelitian menggunakan uji analisis Anova One-Way menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak Syzygium cumini berpengaruh terhadap pertumbuhan C. albicans. Konsentrasi terkecil terjadinya penurunan pertumbuhan koloni C.albicans adalah ekstrak Syzygium cumini pada konsentrasi 25%, sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa nilai KHM terdapat pada konsentrasi 25% dan KBM pada konsentrasi 100%. The method used to inhibit the metabolic processes in tomatoes can be overcome by controlled atmosphere storage. However, this method requires a high cost. Therefore there is another method that is more practical and economical to imitate the mechanism of the controlled atmosphere is by the use of coating materials (coating). Coating material must be able to form a barrier layer of the loss of water content and can maintain fruit quality and does not pollute the environment. Chitosan is a natural alternative as a coating material that is non-toxic and safe for health. This study aimed to observe the effect of chitosan coating on quality and shelf life of fresh tomatoes at different maturity levels. The study design used was completely randomized design (CRD) factorial with two factors. The factor I was the maturity stages which consisted of 3 (three) levels : K1 = full green (0-10% red skin), K2 = light red (30-60% red skin), K3 = ripe ( > 70% red skin). Factor II is storage duration which consisted of 5 (five) level : P1 = 0 day, P2 = 5 days, P3 = 10 days, P4 = 15 days, P5 = 20 days, with 2 (two) replications. The analysis conducted on tomatoes were weight loss, solusble solids concentration, total acid, and vitamin C. The results showed that the tomatoes were coated chitosan could inhibit weight loss, soluble solids concentration, total acid, and vitamin C than untreated tomatoes (control). Chitosan coating with a concentration of 1% and a long soaking for 10 minutes on the tomatoes with the maturity stages of 0-10% skin red and 30-60% skin red could maintain in good condition for 20 days of storage. The research was carried out at the University of Syiah Kuala from September 2007 to November 2007. Fermented cacao beans as raw material for the research were collected from farmers in Seureuke, Aceh Utara. Cacao fat was extracted from the powder by pressing them at high pressure. Remaining fat in the powder was further reduced by organic solvent extraction to approximately 4 percent to meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The cacao powder was alkalized with variation treatments of potassium carbonate concentration of 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 percent and alkalization time of 15, 30 and 45 minutes. The experiment was designed according to randomized factorial design with three replications.Alkalization had affected pH and solubility of cacao powder significantly. pH of the powder increased proportionally as followed the function of y=0.35x + 5.00. The effect of alkalization to the solubility was quadratic with a function of y= -16.34x2 + 76.93x – 60.60. The maximum solubility of 30% was reached at the concentration of potassium carbonate of 2.35%.The alkalization affected the colour hue L* of the cacao powder. Addition of potassium carbonate and time of alkalization had a significant effect but no effect on the interaction. The effect of potassium carbonate and time of alkalization followed the function of y= -4.39x + 42.17 and y= -0.13x + 35.17 respectively. Aroma of alkalized cacao powder was better than commercial products from the market. This study aim to determine the effect of the use of shade and application of compost dose and the interaction between them on plant growth gotu kola. This research was conducted in the experimental farm and plant physiology laboratory, faculty of agriculture, University Syiah Kuala which lasted from April to July 2013. This study uses a separate plot factorial design with 2 main plot, subplot 4 with 3 replications, each unit consists of 3 plants. Factors studied were the use of shade consisting of no shade (100 % radiation) and shade (50 % radiation) and consists of a control dose of compost, compost dose of 10 ton/ha, the dose of compost 20 ton/ha dose of compost and 30 ton/ha. The results showed that shade very significant effect on the number of leaves of plants aged 6 MST. The best plant growth found in 50 % shade treatment . Dose compost very significant effect on stem length is 2, 4 , 6 and 8 MST, significantly affect the number of leaves of plants aged 6 and 8 MST and stolon number of plants aged 4 MST. The best plant growth at treatment doses of compost contained 20 ton/ha. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di kebun percobaan Fakultas Pertanaian Universitas Syiah Kuala Banda Aceh, yang dilaksanakan pada Juni sampai dengan Agustus 2013. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) pola Faktorial, faktor pertama adalah kompos limbah bubuk kopi yang terdiri dari: tanah + kompos limbah bubuk kopi (1:1), tanah + kompos limbah bubuk kopi (1:2), pasir + kompos limbah bubuk kopi (1:1), pasir + kompos limbah bubuk kopi (1:2). Faktor kedua konsentrasi giberelin yang terdiri dari: 0 ppm, 100 ppm, 200 ppm, 300 ppm. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa konsentrasi giberelin 200 ppm berpengaru sangat nyata terhadap jumlah cabang pada umur 60 HST. Berpengaruh nyata terhadap tinggi tanaman, diameter batang serta jumlah bunga tanaman mawar masing-masing pada umur 45 dan 60 HST. Konsentrasi giberelin terbaik terdapat pada 200 ppm. Tidak terdapat interaksi yang nyata antara kompos limbah bubuk kopi dengan konsentrasi giberelin terhadap semua parimeter yang diamati. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui daya hambat ekstrak n-heksana daun C. alata yang tumbuh di daerah Aceh terhadap pertumbuhan jamur C. albicans. Daun C. alata sebanyak 850 gram dimaserasi dengan pelarut n-heksana menghasilkan 31,79 g ekstrak n-heksana pekat berupa gel dan berwarna hijau tua dengan rendemen 3,73%. Ekstrak n-heksana dipisahkan lebih lanjut dengan metode kromatografi kolom cair vakum (KKCV) yang menghasilkan 4 fraksi gabungan, yaitu fraksi A (7,7251 g), fraksi B (1,9419 g), fraksi C (1,3565 g) dan fraksi D (1,4737 g). Berdasarkan hasil uji fitokimia ekstrak kasar dan fraksi-fraksinya mengandung metabolit sekunder dari golongan steroid. Ekstrak n-heksana daun C. alata dan fraksi gabungan diuji aktivitas anti jamur terhadap pertumbuhan jamur C. albicans dengan metode difusi agar menggunakan cakram dengan tiga variasi konsentrasi yaitu 10, 30 dan 50% sebanyak tiga kali pengulangan. Kontrol positif yang digunakan adalah nistatin, sedangkan kontrol negatif yang digunakan adalah n-heksana. Hasil uji aktivitas menunjukkan bahwa fraksi D memiliki aktivitas anti jamur terhadap pertumbuhan C. albicans. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan adanya zona bening dengan diameter 10,6, 11,3 dan 12,6 mm pada konsentrasi 10, 30 dan 50%. Ekstrak kasar n-heksana daun C. alata dan fraksi lainnya tidak memiliki aktivitas anti jamur.
