<text>ABSTRACTSofhia Annisa, 2014, The Use of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Approach in Teaching Speaking (An Experimental Study at the Second Grade Students of SMKN 3 Lhokseumawe). Thesis, Graduate Program in English Language Education, Syiah Kuala University, Darussalam, Banda Aceh. Advisors: (I) Dr. Usman Kasim, M. Ed., (II) Dr. T. Zulfikar, M. EdKey Words: Teaching Speaking, CTL The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Using Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach in teaching speaking for the second grade students of State Senior Vocational High School (SMKN) No. 3 Lhokseumawe. This study employed two classes as the sample which classified into the experimental and control classes. The experimental group was taught by using the CTL approach, while the control group was taught by using conventional method. In collecting the data, test and questionnaire were used, and then the collected data ware analyzed by using computer software of Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS). The research finding shows that the mean score of the post-test of the experimental group, 74, is higher than that of the control group, 60.9. Furthermore, the result of t-test reveals that the score of experimental group is higher than that in the control group (11.512>4.064). The data indicates that the students taught by using CTL approach significantly achieved better score in speaking than those taught by using conventional method. Hence, the alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. In line with the progression among the speaking sub-skills, comprehensibility was the most improved with the average score 3.4 of the 4.0 as the maximum. It shows that the students acquired better understanding after the implementation of CTL approach. Moreover, the result of the data analysis from the questionnaires indicates that almost all students (93.3%) respond positively toward the CTL application since it effectively improves their speaking skill. ABSTRAKSofhia Annisa, 2014, Penerapan Pendekatan Pembelajaran dan Pengajaran Kontekstual (CTL) dalam Pengajaran Speaking (Suatu Kajian Eksperimental pada Siswa Kelas Dua Sekolah Menengah kejuruan Negeri (SMKN) No. 3 Lhokseumawe). Tesis, Program Pasca Sarjana Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Darussalam, Banda Aceh.

<text>Vibration analysis is very essential to be considered in designing a rotor system. The failure in rotor system parts can be avoided by understanding the dynamic characteristic. The objective of this research is to investigate the dynamic characteristic of rotor systems by using finite element method. Finite element method is used to reveal the system characteristic which is derived from the kinetic and potential energy equations. Some models of rotor systems are analysed to understand the dynamic characteristic. The natural frequencies are obtained from the eigen values. The simulation is carried out with the distance of disk from the support as the variable. The result shows that the distance between the disk and the bearing affects the natural frequency of the system.</text>

<text>This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted to find out how KWL strategy is applied in English reading class and the students’ responses towards it. It was done in 2 cycles, in which each cycle consisted of planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflection. The instruments used in collecting the data were tests, observation sheets for the researcher and students, and questionnaires for the students. The results showed that KWL strategy gave better result in improving the students’ reading comprehension skills in finding out the main idea, detailed information, word meaning, and references. The results from tests showed that students’ mean score from pre-test was 62.8 and this increased to 68.2 at the end of cycle 1, and reached 80.4 at the end of cycle 2. Furthermore, the percentage of students’ participation in the teaching and learning process gradually increased. This is shown from the observation checklist where the percentage of students’ involvement is 57% (in the enough category) in cycle 1 and increased up to 80% (in the very good category) in cycle 2. It means that they worked well in conducting all activities. Furthermore, the results of questionnaire showed that 80% of the students responded positively towards the implementation of KWL. This strategy was found to help overcome problems encountered by teachers in getting the students to be more active to participate in the process of learning, expanding knowledge, learning about their needs and their interests, and activating their background knowledge.</text>
