The oysters (Ostreidae) isone of economically important bivalves for urban community in Kuala Gigieng, Aceh Besar District. Presently, the quality and quantity of oyster is decreased over the years by intensive exploitation and water pollution. Therefore, theobjective of the present study was to analyze population structure and habitat condition of oystersin estuary area of Kuala Gigieng, Aceh Besar District, Aceh Province. The sampling was conducted at three locations during August to September 2013. The sampling locations were determined based on anthropogenic activities. A total of two genus of oysters were recorded during the study i.e Crossastrea with four species (C. gigas, C. iridescens, C. angulata, C. virginica) and and Ostrea edulis with one species (O. edulis). The highest density (>39 ind m-2)of oysters were found at undisturbed and less pressure environment. The distribution pattern of Ostreidae in the Kuala Gigieng water was clustered where frequency of occurrence wasin small class size of 24 mm to 37.20 mm with optimum harvested of 32.27 mm. The growth of the oysters was relatively slow as shown by the maximum length (Lmaks) that can only reach 37.91-72.81 mm within 0 to 3.42 years. Generally, oysters population structure and habitat conditions in Kuala Gigieng Water was declined over the yeras. Tiram daging (Ostreidae) merupakan salah satu kerang yang memiliki  nilai ekonomi penting bagi masyarakat Kuala Gigieng. Namun, kualitas dan kuantitas tiram menurun akibat eksploitasi dan pencemaran perairan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis struktur populasi dan kondisi habitat tiram di perairan estuaria Kuala Gigieng Kabupaten Aceh Besar, Provinsi Aceh. Sampling dilakukan pada tiga lokasi selama bulan Agustus hingga September 2013.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat dua genus tiram di perairan Kuala Gigieng yaitu Crassostrea dan Ostrea dengan total 5 spesies (C. gigas, C. iridescens, C. angulata, C. virginica and O. edulis). Kepadatan tertinggi berada pada lokasi yang tekanan penangkapan dan lingkungannya yang rendah. Pola penyebaran tiram daging di Kuala Gigieng cenderung mengelompok. Frekuensi ukuran selang kelas tiram terbanyak yang ditemukan yaitu 24-37,20 mm dengan ukuran layak tangkap yaitu 32,27 mm. Pertumbuhan tiram daging di Kuala Gigieng tergolong lambat, hal ini ditunjukkan dengan panjang maksimal (Lmaks) yang mampu dicapai kerang ini hanya 37,91-72,81 mm dalam waktu 0-3,42 tahun. secara keseluruhan, struktur populasi tiram daging dan kondisi habitat di Kuala Gigieng mulai menurun. Penelitian menggunakan 15 ekor ayam broiler umur sehari (DOC) yang dipelihara selama 34 hari. Kelompok kontrol negatif (A0) adalah yang diberikan pakan standar, kelompok kontrol positif (A1) adalah yang diberikan pakan standar dan diinfeksikan E. coli. Kelompok perlakuan (A2), (A3), dan (A4) diberikan pakan standar dan diinfeksikan E. coli, kemudian ditambah ekstrak daun kemangi dengan konsentrasi 2,5%; 3,5%; dan 4,5%. Penginfeksian E. coli diberikan secara intra peritoneum sebanyak 0,25 ml pada hari ke 15. Ekstrak daun kemangi diberikan sekali sehari mulai dari hari ke 7 sampai hari ke 34. Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan pada kelompok A0 struktur mikroskopik hati normal, pada kelompok A1 terlihat adanya infiltrasi sel leukosit, degenerasi parenkimateus, degenerasi hidropis, hiperemi dan hemoragi pembuluh darah serta nekrosis sel hati. Kelompok A2 dan A3 terlihat perbaikan struktur mikroskopik hati. Pada kelompok A4 hati terlihat mendekati normal. Submukosa dan tunika muskularis pada duodenum memiliki persentase yang hampir sama. Setiap segmen dapat memiliki 0 sampai 8 plika. Sel enteroendokrin terdapat dalam kripta duodenum. The research had been conducted in the microtechnic laboratory of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty of Syiah Kuala University Banda Aceh, from June to November 2013. Explorative design was applied to the research of four P. hermaphroditus. Duodenum, jejunum, and ileum segment were made into histological slide in paraffin method and staining in HE and PAS. The data was analyzed descriptively and presented in tables and figures. The length of small intestine proportion is four to five times the body length. The length of small intestine gradually increased with small intestine mass and body mass. The layer of three segments are composed by mucosa, submucosa, tunica muscularis, and serosa. The order of constituent layers thickness in jejunum and ileum from the thickest to thinnest are mucosa, tunica muscularis, submucosa, and serosa. Submucosa and tunica muscularis in duodenal have almost the same percentage. Each segment could has 0 to 8 plicae. Enteroendocrine cells present in duodenal crypts. Peyer patch is found in lamina propria and submucosa of jejunum and ileum. Circular smooth muscle in inner part and longitudinal in outer part of tunica muscularis. The serosa consists of mesothelium. The carbohydrate distribution of PAS staining appeared in magenta color in striated border, goblet cell, lieberkuhn, and brunner gland. Salinity plays an important role for phenomenon identification of upwelling and downwelling. Upwelling that occurs in the Indian Ocean south of Java to South of Bali is influenced by monsoons, ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) and IOD (Indian Dipole Oscillation Mode). Upwelling and downwelling patterns based on vertical structure of salinity and its seasonal variability within seven years (2004 to 2010) is studied here. Argo Float dataset is used in this study, processed by Ferret software for a vertical schematic model, and Pearson correlated with IOD and SOI indexes. The aim of this study is to  obtain the pattern of upwelling and downwelling based on profile of seasonal salinity during the period 2004-2010 in Indian Ocean south of Java – Bali and correlated with ENSO and IOD.  Further discussion on upwellling is provided since it is more important to the fisheries activity. Result shows an intensive upwelling phenomenon occurs at 110°E correlated with fishing ground area. ENSO and IOD phenomena has been founded also affect upwelling. Upwelling increasing in intensity during the La Nina - IOD (+). Salinitas berperan penting untuk mengidentifikasi fenomena upwelling dan downwelling. Upwelling yang terjadi di samudera Hindia Selatan Jawa hingga Selatan Bali dipengaruhi oleh angin musim, ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) dan IOD (Indian Oscillation Dipole Mode). Dalam peneletian ini dikaji pola upwelling dan downwelling berdasarkan distribusi salinitas secara vertikal dan vaeriabilitas musiman dikaji dalam waktu tujuh tahun (2004 – 2010). Data hasil akuisisi argo float digunakan dalam penelitian ini, diolah menggunakan software Ferret selanjutnya dilakukan  pembuatan model skematik  dan analisa korelasi pearson terhadap Indeks IOD dan SOI. Are the students really actively “engaged” in the teaching programmes and learning activities provided by the university? What might be the implications of student engagement to curriculum, instruction, policy and decision making, and educational administration? This paper focused on the level of academic challenge provided to students. In this study, “academic challenge” was based on study time and course requirements for reading, writing, and application of higher-order thinking skills rather than on student judgments of the difficulty of the coursework (Carini and Kuh, 2003). Specifically, this investigation attempted to ascertain the types of engagement activities at the HEIs of Malaysia and the UAE. Interesting findings are presented, and recommendations are offered in light of student engagement in the context of higher education.
