<text>Red betel (Piper crocatum) is one of traditional medicine that has antibacterial activity. This research was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity of the methanol extract of red betle leaves against growth of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method with 5 treatment groups consist of red betle leaves extract with concentration 150 mg/mL, 300 mg/mL, 450 mg/mL, 600 mg/mL, and negative control (sterile water) with 4 times repetition. The methanol extract of red betle leaves was obtained by maceration technique using methanol 96% as solvent. Antibacterial activity test conducted with Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Data of this research were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Duncan Test. The results showed that red betel leaf extracts in concentration 150 mg/mL, 300 mg/mL, 450 mg/mL, 600 mg/mL provide average inhibition zone respectively 9,0 mm, 11,2 mm, 13,6 mm and 15,7 mm. The result showed that red betel leaf extracts in tested concentration showed antibacterial activity against MRSA. The higher concentration of extract, the greater inhibition area was formed.</text>

<text>The antibacterial mechanism of the ethyl acetate extracts from naked oat against Bacillus subtilis were studied in this paper based on assays such as cell wall alkaline phosphatase (AKP), permeability and integrity of cell membrane as well as electron microscopy observations. The results showed that the ethyl acetate extracts had significant effects on AKP, permeability and integrity of cell membrane. We concluded that the mechanism of action of the ethyl acetate extracts against B. subtilis might be described as:Acting on cell wall and membrane, resulting in disruption, cell lysis, and the leakage of intracellular constituents according to the results of AKP, the leakage of electrolytes, the losses of contents (proteins, reducing sugars and 260 nm absorbing materials) assays and electron microscopy observations. Overall, the results clearly indicated that the ethyl acetate extracts from naked oat was potential to control the contamination of foods caused by bacterial diseases</text>

<text>Rabies control programs, including extensive vaccination with attenuated or inactivated vaccines. However, such vaccines are not without problems and can have detrimental effects. Indeed attenuated vaccines can revert to a more virulent form, and inactivated vaccines may produce serious side effects. These facts, have led to the creation of a new generation of vaccines: recombinant-DNA vaccines, synthetic peptide vaccines, and anti-idiotypic vaccines. The aim of this study is to study the result of anti-idiotypic immunization methods in dogs detected by using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Anti-idiotype antibodies against rabies (Ab2) were isolated from chicken blood, separated by means of ammonium sulfate precipitation, then dialyzed using PBS pH 8.0 for 24 hours at 2 – 8 oC and purified using affinity chromatography column. Three groups of dogs were immunized, group I was immunized intramuscularly (i.m) with purified IgY, group II was immunizded oraly (p.o) with purified IgY and group III was immunized intramuscularly (i.m) with rabies viral vaccines. The antibody response (Ab3) was detected using Agar Gel Precipitation Test (AGPT). The efficacy of Ab3 was detected using ELISA. By ELISA, the result of immunization indicated that the level of Ab3 titers of anti-idiotypic vaccine immunized dogs intramuscularly are more than 0.5 IU/ml (protective according to WHO standard), and significantly higher than oraly immunization, but it significantly lower than Ab3 titers of rabies viral vaccine immunized dogs. The conclusion of this study is intramuscularly immunization of anti-idiotypic antibodies can induce protective immune response against rabies virus, although its lower than antibodies titer of viral vaccine, it has a good prospect for vaccine development in controlling rabies</text>

<text>This research was conducted to know the activity of crude ethanol extract of pliek u (E) through in vitro assays. Pliek u obtained from households industry in the Reudep village Aceh Besar, Aceh province. Yeasts used in clinical trials is Candida albicans isolates obtained from the Mycology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bogor Agricultural University. Anticandidal activity was determined on a paper disc, whereas in the broth dilution method is used to set a killing time activity of the E. The concentration of E that is used to determine the killing time activity is the value of LC50. Crude ethanol extract of pliek u (E) showed anticandidal activity with inhibitory zone diameters of 10.67 ± 0.47 mm. Ethanol extract of pliek u at a concentration of 3.36 mg / ml can reduce the number of C. albicans within two hours at 2.57 log CFU / ml compared to controls at 7.42 log CFU / ml. Based on this study can be concluded that ethanol extract of pliek u (E) can be considered an alternative drug for treating candidiasis, so it needs further research to veterinary clinics in vivo applications</text>

<text>Urtica dioica (Stinging nettle) leaves have been used as a traditional medicine to treatrheumatoid arthritis, to alleviate rheumatic pain benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), diuretic and prevention of kidney stones by local people in Middle East region especially in Iran, Turkey and East Europe. Hence, this investigation evaluates the antidepressant effect of selected crude extracts in the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST), two models predictive of antidepressant activity. The acute treatment of mice with extracts by intra-peritoneal (i.p.) route significantly reduced the immobility time in the FST (50 and 100 mg/kg) and TST (50 and 100 mg/kg), as compared to positive controls (haloperidol and fluoxetine) at 1 and 10 mg/kg, respectively. On the third day of experiment, a significant decrease of mobility was observed for chloroform extract (CE I) and butanol extract (BE II) compared to first day. CE I and BE II led to reduction of immobility time, as the selected extracts with two doses administered were different compared to the control, in the FST method by 65.37% and53.92% for 100 mg/kg, respectively. However, CE I showed the best result compared to our positive controls. Similar results of increased antidepressant effect, that was, of immobility time depending on the concentration administered, were obtained with the TST method. Also our data showed that there was no significant differences between doses (50 and 100 mg/kg). The results suggested that the antidepressant action of the butanol extract and of U. dioica its fraction (BE II2) was mediated by an interaction with 5-hydroxytrptamine (5-HT). U. dioica showed a potential source for the isolation of important natural products with antidepressant-like properties. However, further studies are still required</text>

<text>Chromolaena odorata or Tekelan has been used traditionally to cope with diabetes mellitus, but the scientific evidence as antidiabetic agent has not been previously reported. Therefore, it is necessary to test the antidiabetic activity using ethanol extract of the tekelan leaves in male mice induced by alloxan. Mice were induced intravenously by alloxan dose of 55 mg/kg bw. After 7 days, mice were diabetic ( KGD > 200 mg/dL ) and were grouped into 6 groups: negative control group (only treated with CMC - Na) , positive control group (glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kg bw) and the 4 other groups were given ethanol extract of Tekelan leaves at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw. Dosage administered for 28 days and blood glucose levels was checked every 7 days using a glucotest. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variation at 95% confidence level. Ethanol extract of tekelan’s leaves at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw can lower blood levels from day 7 to day 28 and was significantly different compared to the negative control group ( p < 0.05). Ethanol extract of tekelan’s leaves at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw showed antidiabetic activity in alloxan-induced mice.</text>

<text>Research on antidiabetic activity of ethanol leaf extracts Kluwih (Artocarpus camansi) has been carried out to determine the antidiabetic activity of ethanol extract of leaves kluwih (EELK) of mice using glucose tolerance test. The study began by dividing the mice into 6 groups. Group 1 was given 1% CMC, group 2 to group 4, given EELK 50, 100, 200, 400 mg / kg bw, respectively, and group 6 administered with glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kg bw. Thirty minutes later each group was given glucose 30 mg/kg bw. After 30 min of glucose loading, blood glucose levels of mice were measured, and measured again at minute 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes. The results showed that the glucose tolerance test EELK a significant effect in lowering blood glucose levels compared to controls at 30 and 60 minutes after administration of glucose. At minute 90 to 150, the effect of blood glucose levels EELK restore back to normal. EELK demonstrated ability to reduce blood glucose levels, and EELK doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg bw showed antidiabetic effects better than a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg bw. Increasing doses showed antagonistic effects: the ability to increase blood glucose levels.</text>
