An outer layer of a bark of Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obutusa) tree, a Japanese cypress, was used as a sample material. Experiments were carried out in a semibatch reactor apparatus that allows the study of the effect of reaction temperatures in a single run. The results by using adsorbent dosage 20 g/L indicated the   adsorption efficiency was up to 99%, and the best result is obtained about 99,963% when adsorbate is  conducted with modified bark for 90 minutes. The adsorption behavior by modified bark followed the Langmuir isotherm model and the Freundlich isotherm model for modified bark. The maximum adsorption capacity of lead(II) ions are 34,98 mg adsorbate/g adsorbent for unmodified bark when contact time is 60             minutes. The influence of contact time showed that adsorption reached the equilibrium rapidly. A batch adsorption model followed the pseudo second order kinetic. Experimental analysis involving the determination of trace metals, pH and methane gas yield, were carried out with the use of the Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and Biogas5000 analyser. The results showed that there was an increase in the pH of the system; the amount of methane gas yield equally increased by 12% and the Hydraulic Retention Time decreased from 50 days to 25 days on addition of ethylene diamine- N, N-diacetic acid chelating ligand. Also, increasing the concentration of the chelating ligand further decreased the HRT of the digester system from 25 days to 19days. Concentration of trace metals like Iron, Cobalt and Nickel within the digester system ranged from 0.001-0.050 mg/L; these metals reacted with ethylene diamine- N, N-diacetic acid chelating ligand to form metal chelates. The metal chelate formed resulted in the catalysis of the hydrolysis stage (which is the rate determining step) of the anaerobic digestion process. The redox reaction displayed a stoichiometry of 1:1 and obeys the rate law: -dNGB3-/dt = k2NGB3-]Cr2O7 2- . The second order rate constant increases with increase in acid concentration and in the ionic strength of reaction medium. The rates of reaction displayed a positive salt effect. Addition of acrylonitrile to a partially reacted mixture in the presence of excess methanol did not lead to gel formation. Added cations and anions inhibited the naphthol green B - Cr2O7 2- reaction. Results of the Michaelis – Menten plot gave no evidence of intermediate complex formation during the course of the reaction. Berbagai usha telah dilakukan untuk mengatasi pencemaran logam berat ini. Salah satu metode yang dapat digunakan adalah metode adsorpsi menggunakan arang aktif. Beberapa produk samping pertanian berpotensi sebagai adsorben, salah satunya adalah cangkang buah coklat (Theobroma cacao L.). Pada penelitian ini, cangkang buah coklat yang digunakan sebagai adsorben Cd (II) telah diaktivasi dengan asam sitrat 0,5 M dan NH4OH 1 M. Parameter yang diujikan adalah aktivasi adsorben, konsentrasi ion logam Cd (II) dan waktu kontak. Kondisi optimum yang diperoleh untuk adsorben C-sitrat adalah pada menit ke-45 dan C-amonia pada menit ke-60 dengan persentase adsorpsi masing-masing 99,62% dan 95,80%. Tipe isoterm yang dianut oleh adsorben C-amonia adalah tipe isoterm Freundlich dan adsorben C-sitrat menganut tipe isoterm Langmuir dan Freundlich dengan linearitas ? 90%.Kata kunci : Logam berat, Theobroma cacao L, Uji adsorpsiABSTRACTHeavy metal waste generated from various industrial processes pose many problems for the environment. Various attempts have been made to overcome this heavy metal pollution. One of the methods that can be used is the adsorption method using activated charcoal. Some potential agricultural byproducts as adsorbents, one of which is the brown fruit shell (Theobroma cacao L.). In this study, the fruit shell of chocolate used as adsorbents of Cd (II) has been modified with citric acid 0,5 M and 1 M NH4OH is the activation parameters of the tested adsorbent, metal ion concentration of Cd (II) and contact time. The optimum conditions were obtained for the C-citrate adsorbent is at minute 45 and C-ammonia in the 60th minute with a percentage of adsorption, respectively 99,62% and 95.80%. Bentonit alam (Ca-bentonit) dimodifikasi melalui proses pertukaran kation menjadi Na-bentonit dan H-bentonit, kemudian dipilarisasi menggunakan AlCl3 dan NaOH menghasilkan bentonit terpilar alumina. Bentonit terpilar alumina yang diperoleh mempunyai luas permukaan spesifik (72,42 m2/gram) yang lebih besar dibanding dengan bentonit tidak terpilar. Uji aktivitas katalitis bentonit terpilar alumina pada reaksi dehidrasi etanol, 1-propanol dan 2-propanol dilakukan pada suhu 200°C - 400°C. Suhu optimum reaksi dehidrasi etanol, 1-propanol dan 2-propanol menggunakan katalis bentonit terpilar alumina berturutturut adalah 250, 400 dan 200°C dengan konsentrasi dietil eter 25,44; 2,31 dan 3,29%.
