The objective of this study is to study the quality of kefir with different amount of starter added and different kind of milk. The quality of kefir was evaluated by measuring lactic acid level, syneresis, crude protein, crude fat and amount of active microorganism. The result showed that the different percentage of starter and kind of milk has a high significant on syneresis and Lactic Acid level (P < 0,01). The best interaction was resulted from the combination of 10% starter and UHT milk. The result also indicated that the different percentage of starter and kind of milk has no effect on crude protein, crude fat and the amount of active microorganism. <text>The effect of level substitution of single cell protein (CJ Prosin) by commercial feed on broiler performanceABSTRACT. A research to find out the effect of the substitution level of single cell protein in commercial feed on Broiler’s performance was conducted from June to December 2011. The purpose of this experiment is to find out alternative protein sources for animal feedstuff that can be used as protein substitution in animal feed on body weight, feed consumption and feed conversion efficiency. The experiment is considered as preliminary experiment to observe the response of single cell protein on broiler performance. This research was carried out at experimental farm, Animal Husbandry Department, Syiah Kuala University. Totally, 250 DOC of Cobb breed with the average body weight 36,78±2,32 gr. used in this experiment. Completely Randomized Design was applied in this experiment with 5 treatments; P0 (commercial feed), P1(commercial feed substituted with 6% SCP), P2 (commercial feed substituted with 12% SCP) dan P3 (commercial feed substituted with 18%CSP). Each treatment consist of 5 replications with total of 20 treatment’s units. Feed was formulated with isoprotein and isoenergy based on NRC requirement ( 23% protein ; 3200 kcal ME/kg at the age of 1-2 week and 20 % protein ; 3200 kcal ME/kg at the age of 4-7 week). Data was analyzed by using SPSS program SPSS (Window 2008). Differences between treatment were stated by Duncan’s multiple range test. The results of the experiment showed that commercial feed substituted with the level of SCP was not significantly difference (P>0.05) on body weight gain, feed consumption, and feed conversion ratio. On the other hand, administration of SCP as substituted feed commercial on the level of 12 % and 16 % influenced significantly (P<0.05) on body weight gain and feed conversion ratio, but not on feed consumption at the level of 12% SCP. As a conclusion, the use of SCP as animal feed sources in commercial feed only could be tolerated at the level of 6%.</text>

<text>Carcass quality of local sheep fed fermented rice straws supplemented with soybean oilABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to determine if supplementation of soybean oil in the ration in order to increase conjugated linoleic acid of meat has concurrent effects on carcass characteristics and qualities of thin-tailed sheep. Sheep were fed fermented ricestraws supplemented with 0, 3 and 6% soybean oil. The experimental design used was a Randomized Completely Block Design. Eighteen sheep with initial age of 6-8 months and initial bodyweight of 17.46 ± 1.61 kg were used. The treatments consisted of soybean oil supplementation 0, 3 and 6%. Variables measured were carcass conformation, GR thickness, backfat thickness, subcutaneous fat score, and kidney and pelvic fat score. Result showed that sheep fed ration with 0 % soybean oil produced carcass with carcass conformation score of 8.50 ± 1.05, GR thickness 11.50 ± 1.05 mm, back fat thickness 2.67 ± 0.82 mm, subcutaneus fat score 3.50 ± 0.55 mm, kidney and pelvic fat score 2.00 ± 0.00. Sheep feed ration with 3% soybean oil; carcass conformation score 8.67 ± 1.21, GR thickness 11.67 ± 1.21 mm, back fat thickness 2.83 ± 0.98 mm, subcutaneus fat score 3.50 ± 0.55, kidney and pelvic fat score 1.83 ± 0.4. Sheep feed ration with 6% soybean oil; carcass conformation score 9.00 ± 1.26, GR thickness 12.50 ± 1.52 mm, back fat thickness 3.33 ± 0.82 mm, subcutaneus fat score 3.50 ± 0.55, kidney and pelvic fat score 1.83 ± 0.41. Score of carcass conformation, thickness of GR, thickness of back fat, score of subcutaneus fat, and score of kidney-pelvic fat were not influenced by supplementation of soybean oil. In conclusion, suplementation soybean oil in the ration to increase conjugetaed linoleic acid has no significant concurrent effect on carcass quality characteristics of local sheep.</text>

<text>In vitro analysis of oligosaccharide from extract rumbia fruit (Metroxylon sago Rottb.) as prebioticABSTRACT. Despite a range of commercially available oligosaccharides there is plenty of room to develop new, functionally enhanced prebiotics. current generation of oligosaccharides was not rationally developed. better understanding of factors determining the prebiotic activity of a particular oligosaccharide. Despite the range of commercially available oligosaccharides mixtures (mainly fructo and galacto-oligosaccharides), very few studies are focused on the mechanisms behind the prebiotic activity of particular oligosaccharides. Probably this lack is due to the unavailability of well characterized oligosaccharide fractions for prebiotic function assessment. The objectives of this research were to asses the ability of lactic acid bacteria in fermentation of oligosaccharide and as prebiotic (in vitro). Material used was oligosaccharide of purified rumbia fruit extract. Analysis of oligosaccharide as prebiotic was conducted in vitro using lactic acid bacteria. The lactic acid bacteria consisted Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium animalis, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Lactobacillus casei Rhamnosus. The growth media for bacteria was a liquid MRS basic medium where glucose was substituted by oligosaccharide of purified rumbia fruit extract. Incubation was in aerob for Lactobacillus and anaerob for Bifidobacterium in incubator 37oC. The lactic acid bacteria was calculated 24-48 hours during incubation periode. The variables observed were: oligosaccharide component, ability of lactic acid bacteria in fermentation of oligosaccharide, and growth of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium). The result showed that the oligosaccharide component from extract rumbia fruit consisted of: sucrose, stacchiose, and raffinose. The result showed that the oligosaccharide extract rumbia fruit was significantly (P<0.05) the growth of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) and fermentation of oligosaccharide. It is concluded that oligosaccharide of rumbia fruit extract could be used as prebiotic.</text>

<text>The quality improvement of rice straw, rice bran and cassava waste by fermentation of fungi and yeast ABSTRACT. Biomass of agricultural residues are highly potential as ruminant feedstuff. However, it is characterized by high content of indigestible fiber and low nutritive value, due to the strong hydrogen bonds in the lignocelluloses. Biological treatment by using microbes seems to be an alternative, because of the capability, with no pollution problem. An experiment has been conducted to seek for the fungi and yeast which capable to improve the quality of rice straw, rice bran and cassava waste. The trial was done by the technique of in sacco and in vitro, in a completely randomized block design. The variables measure were : dry matter and protein digestibility, protein solubility and nutrient composition of the fermentation product. Based on the all variables measure, the current study concluded that the microbes chosen were : monoculture of T. viride for rice straw, monoculture of A. niger for rice bran and biculture of A luchuensis and S. cereviseae for cassava waste.</text>

The objective of this study is to know quality of yogurt with variant of percentage Lactobacillus casei and sugar level. The parameter of this study were the crude protein applying the Kjeldhal method, the crude fat applying the Gerber method, the sum of amount of alive of micro-organism applying the plate count method and the organoleptic applying the square of. The result of this study showed that the different of sugar level is significant (P<0.05) on crude protein and crude fat, however the different of percentage L casei not significant (P > 0,05) on all parameter. The interaction is only found between two factors on crude fat. The highest of the rate amount of alive microorganism, crude protein and acetic acid are found in yogurt using 10% L. casei and 15% sugar level. From organoleptic test, it’s found that yogurt using 10% L. casei and 15% sugar level is the most prevered kind of yogurt.</text>

<text>Effectivity of fermentation with different substrates source on rice straw qualityABSTRACT. The research on effectivity of fermentation with different substrates source on rice straw quality has been conducted at Animal Husbandry Field Laboratory, University of Syiah Kuala. The objective of study is to learn rice straw fermented quality as animal feed with addition of different substrat. Complete Randomize Design with factorial pattern consist of two factors which were A = storage time with 2 level ( a1 = one month; a2 = two month) and B = substrate sources (b1 = Coccoa skin fruit, b2 = rice bean and b3 = sagoo). Variables observed were protein level, crude fiber and ash level. The statistical analisis show that there is no significant effect of treatment on protein level, crude fiber and ash. There is no interaction between source of substrates and storage time. These results revealed that all substrates source (coccoa skin fruit, rice bran and sagoo) could used as an energy for starter in rice straw fermented.</text>

<text>Economical contribution of women in merchant-chart-fried chicken business in satellite market in padang cityABSTRACT. As social-economic demands increased, the complexity of family needs grew higher. To fulfill them, woman has to take part in making a living. This research aims to see economical performance of women in running merchant-cart-fried-chicken, identifying the obstacles faced and giving alternatives of solution. This research was conducted by survey method, with respondents of merchant-cart-fried-chicken seller in several markets in Padang city. Sample was taken with proportional allocation of 15 people. Data was analyzed by descriptive analysis method. The research showed that economical performance of women merchant-cart-fried-chicken seller is low with working hour o5 5.07 hours/day. Percentage of women that take part in all activities start from planning to marketing is 32.5%. This is a potential business to develop, with average income 92.259,58 IDR/day and average R/C ratio 1.29. Internal constraints were family relation pattern that scoped women’s part in fulfilling family need, meanwhile the external constraints were the difficulties in acquiring more capital to develop the business and the price fluctuation of chicken as a main raw material. Alternative solution that can be offered was opening the business at home so that women can spare more time to work the business and accessing soft loan with light requirements. The conclusion of the research was that women took part in making a living for the family, however the contribution is low due to patriarchy value as an internal constraint and capital problem as external constraint. The solution offered was taking soft loan and building relation with raw material supplier.</text>
