<text>Traditional brackishwater aquaculture in Indonesia focuses on production of shrimp and milkfish. However, since the 1990’s production of shrimp, particularly Penaeus monodon, has become problematic because ofthe prevalence of white-spot disease. Crop losses due to white-spot disease have limited production of P. monodon in traditional tambak throughout Indonesia. Because of this, many tambak have fallen into disuse, or their use islimited. In response, we are developing and trialling diversification options for tambak farmers in Aceh and South Sulawesi. Alternative production options that we are evaluating include Nile tilapia (ikan nila) and soft-shell crab(kepiting lunak) in Aceh, and Nile tilapia, swimming crab (rajungan) and rabbitfish (baronang) in South Sulawesi. In Aceh our main focus has been on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture, either alone or co-cultured with milkfish (Chanos chanos). We have undertaken trials with farmers in Samalanga and Jangka (Kab. Bireuen) and Banda Mulia (Kab. Aceh Tamiang). Overall, our trials have shown that tilapia will grow and survive well at salinities below 20 ppt. Above 20 ppt, growth rate is reduced and the fish are prone to bacterial disease. At salinities above 20 ppt, milkfish (bandeng) perform better in ponds than tilapia. Our trials in Aceh have demonstrated that Nile tilapia can provideincome to farmers comparable with shrimp culture. Out of a total of 22 trials to date, 9 ponds (41%) have met or exceeded our reference profitability of IDR 1–5 million per hectare per crop. Fourteen ponds (64%) have been‘profitable’, i.e. have generated positive economic returns. This figure is similar to the profitability figure for traditional shrimp ponds (64–73%), indicating that Nile tilapia culture in brackishwater ponds provides economic returns similar to traditional shrimp culture. Based on these results, we recommend Nile tilapia culture to farmers whose ponds are <20 ppt. This provides a profitable production option for farmers in areas subject to low salinities, or during the rainy season when salinities are depressed. Because outbreaks of white-spot disease are particularly common and severe during the rainy season, Nile tilapia culture provides a viable option for income generation for Acehnese tambak farmers under conditions where shrimp culture is too risky</text>

<text>In many crude oil spill sites, dispersants are widely applied during clean-up operations without adequate consideration of their environmental effects. This is despite the fact that the water accommodated fractions of these mixtures contain toxic components. This study investigated the uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the water accommodated fractions (WAF) of a mixture of a dispersant, Goldcrew and Bonny Light crude oil using a tilapian fish, Oreochromis niloticus. The aim was to determine the critical body residue (CBR) of the PAHs in the fish exposed to the dispersed, dispersant and crude oil in water (DCOWAF-PAH) and undispersed, crude oil in water only (COWAF-PAH) regimes of the mixtures in the WAF. The control experiment had water only. The concentrations for both regimes of exposure were at sub-lethal levels of 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6ml/L for fifty days using renewal static bioassay. The types and total concentrations of PAHs were analyzed for in the crude oil, fish feed administered, preexposed fish sample, dispersant and test water before exposure. The sixteen known carcinogenic PAHs were found in the crude oil (1916.4ppm), eleven in the fish feed (0.57ppm), three in the pre-exposed fish(0.007ppm), and none in the dispersant and test medium (water). The concentration of the PAHs in the fish from the DCOWAF-PAH ranged from 3.6128-7.9744ppm while that of the COWAF-PAH ranged from 3.4114-3.9693ppm. The concentrations of individual PAHs recovered in the fish showed that napthalene had the highest CRB level of 6.7780ppm and 3.2610ppm, anthracene was 0.6590ppm and not detected (N.D) while acenaphthene had the lowest CBR of 0.00001ppm and below the limit of quantification (<LOQ) forthe DCOWAF-PAH and COWAF-PAH exposure phases respectively. The results showed the order of the CBR level as NAP>FL>BaF>BaP>BaA>FLU>PHE in the COWAF-PAH irrespective of exposure concentration, while for the DCOWAF-PAH, it was NAP>FLU>BaF>BaP>B(ghi)P>BaA>BkF>PHE. The results demonstrated that the presence of the dispersant, Goldcrew increased the critical body residue of the PAHs irrespective of the concentration in the fish samples. This was especially so for the low molecular weight PAHs (<200). Thus, the application of dispersants for crude oil spills need to be done with utmost care particularly in fishing grounds</text>

<text>Malaria still cause health problem in tropics including Indonesia, since its generate high mortality rate. Medication of Malaria has been performed long time ago without optimum result. One reason is the high rate of P.falciparum resistance on conventional antimalaria drug. This research aim to evaluate the activity of jaloh leaves extract (Willow leaves) on the inhibition of P.falciparum in vitro. This was a laboratory experimental research that using Indonesian isolates of cloroquin resistance P.falciparum obtained from NAMRU-2, Jakarta. P.falciparum isolate that has been synchronized were divided in to 3 groups of treatment : Jaloh leaves ethanolic extract, jaloh leaves ethyl acetate extract, and jaloh leaves n-hexane extract. Each group were then alloted into 5 dosage levels: 6,25ug/ml; 12,50ug/ml; 25,00ug/ml; 50,00ug/ml; and 100ug/ml. The observation of parasitemia degree were done 48 hours post-incubation in which the thick blood smear were colored with Giemsa and then examined using bioculer microscope. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA and Newman-Keuls test. The result showed that the percentage of P.falciparum growth inhibition were sinificantly different (P<0.05) among treatments wherein ethanol extract and ethyl acetate extract more inhibit P.falciparum growth than the hexane extract. The administration of different dosage also resulted in significance different (P<0.05) of P.falciparum growth inhibition. This research concludes that jaloh leaves extract could inhibit P.falciparum growth.</text>

<text>The advantage of palladium modified La-doped NaTaO3 (Pd/La-NaTaO3)semiconductor photocatalyst for enhanced hydrogen generation under irradiation at the ultraviolet range has been investigated. The La-NaTaO3 has been synthesized by sol-gel technique. The palladiums are loaded by impregnation of aqueous palladium nitrate solution. The palladium supported of La-NaTaO3 composites are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution HRTEM (HRTEM), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The HRTEM images indicate that Pd nanoparticles (NPs) aredeposited on the surface of La-NaTaO3. Most of the Pd deposits have diameters ranging from 3 to 4 nm. XAS spectra shows that the Pd-La-NaTaO3 absorbance profiles of the pristine and used samples are overlapped with the Pd foil, indicating that oxidation of the fresh and used cocatalyst was identical in nature with that of the palladium foil. Hydrogen production from pure water irradiation with ultra violet (UV) light source is 1.1 mmol g-1h-1 on La-NaTaO3 photocatalysts. The activity of the La-NaTaO3 up to 8.9 mmol g-1h-1 H2 froman aqueous methanol solution are obtained. The hydrogen evolution on the La-NaTaO3 sample can be further increase of 36.49 mmol g-1h-1 or 4.1 times higher by depositing nanosized Pd as a cocatalyst on the surface photocatalyst. The highest hydrogen generation is observed at 0.15 wt% Pd loading. The higher activity of the Pd/tantalates from aqueous methanol solution is attributed to an important suppressing in the electron–hole pairs recombination due to the effect produced by the presence of La in the NaTaO3 structure as well as by the role of methanol acts as hole-trap and Pd like electron-trap.</text>

The aim of the research was to study the role of B. japonicum induced by genistein on soybean production. The experiment used Randomized Complete Block Design Factorial with three factors. The first factor was genistein treatments consisted of without and with genistein. The second factor was B. japonicum consisted of without B. japonicum, B. japonicum isolate 1, B. japonicum isolate 2 and B. japonicum isolate 3. The third factor was soil water content condition namely 40%, 60% and 80% of field capacity. The parameters observed were plant growth rate, relative growth rate, nett assimilation rate, dry weight/plant and dry weight of 100 seeds. The result research showed that the treatment of interaction between B. japonicum induced genistein under 80% of field capacity gave the higher plant growth rate, plant growth rate, relative growth rate, nett assimilation rate and dry weight of 100 seeds.</text>

Subsequently the extracts were characterized by GC-MS, to determine the fragmentation pattern softhe compunds contained in leaves of A. camansi. Furthermore the hexane extract further fractionated to obtain pure isolates. Pure isolate of the compound as white solid with a melting point of176-1780C. Characterized to the pure compound with1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT and reinforced with HSQC, and HMBC, expressed asdidekilketon (C21H42O).</text>

<text>Two types of catalysts based on Indonesia Natural Zeolite (INZ) and Australia Natural Zeolite (ANZ) were prepared by impregnation of 5 % of active metal cobalt. The synthesized catalysts were calcined in air at 5500C for 6 hours. The catalysts were then used to degrade phenol concentration in heterogeneous catalytic oxidation with the presence of oxone as peroxymonosulphate source. The catalysts were also characterized by several techniques such as SEM, EDS and N2 adsorption. It was found that Co-INZ and Co-ANZ are effective catalyst in activation of peroxymonosulphate to produce sulphate radicals to degrade phenol concentration. In reaction test of 5 hours, with condition of 25 ppm phenol, 0.2 g catalyst loading, 1 gram oxone, 250C and stirring speed of 400 rpm, Co-INZ and Co-ANZ could reduce phenol up to 100% and 70% respectively. Further, several parameters such as amount of catalyst loading, phenol concentration, oxidant concentration and temperature are found as key factors in phenol degradation. Moreover, based on the trend of phenol degradation following by kinetic study, it was proved that the pseudo first order kinetics would fit to phenol oxidation with the rate constants of 0.0106 and for 0.0033 Co-INZ and Co-ANZ respevtively</text>

<text>Sugar wastewater can be a serious problem for environment because of highorganic content namely nitrogen concentration. Other problems caused by the waste are unpleasant colour and an inferable smell. The appropriate treatment is needed for solving the problems. The growth of algae in the pool of waste was suggested as the propertreatment for sugar wastewater. The aim of this research was to study the use of Chlorella vulgaris for the treatment of artificial waste water. Chlorella vulgaris was cultured in artificial wastewater having low pH.Pseudomonas putida was used to supply CO2 for photosynthesis process in a lagoon tank and it was added at the second day. Polyacrylate polyalcohol was also introduced to provide buoyancy effect of the medium All of the experiments were conducted in a rectangular tank using the artificial illumination and it wasalso equipped by air pump to supply oxygen and circulate the waste in the tank. pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Optical Density (OD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Nitrogen (TN) were measured daily during the experiments. COD was successfully reduced up to 6900 mg/l and 29% of COD removal at the fourth day. The low pH experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of a consortium of algae and bacteria at TN removal from wastewater by reducing the TN from 70 mg/l to below 35 mg/l. According to the above results, it can be concluded that the consortium of Pseudomonas putida and Chlorella vulgaris was applicable as one of alternatives for sugar wastewater treatment</text>

<text>As the availability of high quality trees decreased and the price increased the wood base panel industry is looking to replace the common used wood by agricultural residues or fast growing trees and plants as well as agricultural plants like hemp (Cannabis sativa L.). Hemp offers characteristics that are similar to wood properties. In line with this research, three-layered particleboards under utilization of hemp material were developed. The hemp was used in combination with industrial produced particles to find out which amount of wood can be substituted by hemp and further to investigate which decreased densities can be realized by the use of hemp. Hemp can be used for the production of lightweight particleboards due to its lower bulk density compared to wood. All developed hemp/wood based particleboards were produced under industrial parameters in laboratory and pilot scale using conventional urea formaldehyde-resin, hardeners, and hydrophobic substances. The mechanical technological properties of all produced innovative particleboards and reference particleboards were determined according to current DIN/EN standards. In detail density profile, bending strength, internal bond strength, surface strength, and thickness swelling were determined. Compared to the produced reference particleboards, consisting only of wood particles, the developed hemp/wood particleboards possessed better mechanical-technological properties. Furthermore it was realized to produce particleboards with densities of 550 kg/m³ by using hemp due to its low bulk density which fulfills the given DIN/EN requirements. As an overall result we found out that hemp is a real alternative to nowadays used wood for the production of particleboards in general and for the production of lightweight particleboards in particular. </text>

<text>One of the problems of immature rubber plants are non-productive period is too long which is about 5-6 years old. Various efforts have been made to speed up non-productive period, including the application of exogenous growth regulators. This is related to biological natural hormones found in plantduring immature rubber. One of the hormones that affects the auxin hormone . This study aims to analyze content auxin hormone found in some clones and plant age during immature rubber. This research was conducted descriptive / review directly to the field by taking leaf samples at the clones PB 260, PB 340 and RRIM 712 which have been determined. To determine the levels of hormones contained in rubber leaf, leaf samples were analyzed at the Research Center for Biology Indonesian Institute of Sciences in Bogor. Observation auxin hormone levels. The results showed that the type clones and different plant age have different content auxint. The highest content of auxin there at the age of 2 years is the plant on clones PB 260 (116.5 ppm) and RRIM 712 (114.0 ppm).</text>
