<text>The objective of this study is to find out whether there is a significant difference in speaking performance between students who are taught using the Examples Non-Examples Technique (ENET) and those who are taught using the Grammar Translation Method (GTM). To achieve the goal of this study, the experimental design method was used with an experimental class and a control class. The sample of study was a class of 45 students as the experimental class and another class of 45 students as the control class. The instruments used for the study were tests. The data was analyzed through statistical formula including finding the frequency distribution, range (R), class of data (K), class of interval (I), mean, standard deviation, and Z-score. The results showed that the Z-score pre-test of experimental and the control classes was 1.3 (Z count<Z table) in which the Z table was 2.04. This means that there was no significant difference between the scores of both classes in pre-treatment. However, in post-treatment the Z-score for the experimental class and control classes was 5.1 (Z count>Z table) which indicated that there was a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class in post-treatment. In conclusion, ENET can be applied as an alternative technique in teaching speaking. The research hypothesis (Ha) is also proven that the use of ENET provides a positive contribution for the development of students’ speaking performance.</text>

<text>The aim of this evaluative descriptive study is to describe the real life teaching of English at a junior high school in Banda Aceh. This research described the procedures used in teaching English including how the teacher taught English from the beginning to end, the teacher’s methods and techniques, and the difficulties faced by the teacher. The instruments used in collecting the data for this study were an observation sheet, an interview guide, and document analysis of the syllabus and lesson plans. The results of this study showed that: (1) the teacher applied various procedures in teaching: (a) in opening the lesson, i.e. brainstorming students ideas related to the topic, stimulating the students to think creatively, and reviewing the previous lesson, (b) in the instructional processes, i.e. integrating the four skills namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the teaching process, and (c) in closing the lesson, i.e. giving opportunities to the students to ask questions, concluding the lesson, motivating and appreciating the students. (2) The methods and techniques used by the teacher were various in order to make the teaching process interesting. (3) There were some difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching including the noisy classroom and students coming in and out of the classroom. Finally, this research suggests that the teacher should be more creative and innovative in creating the lesson, should mix methods in order to create a more effective teaching-learning process and should control the students from coming in and out of the classroom too freely. </text>

<text>Teachers have a vital role in the teaching learning process; their role supports the development of students’ competency through learning. A teacher is required to possess comprehensive knowledge in pedagogy. In fact, a teacher can choose from a variety of methods to teach reading. In this study the researcher tried to find out the relationship between theory and facts. This study used descriptive research methods. The populations of this study were the English teachers and students in a junior high school in Banda Aceh. The instruments used were: observation sheets, questionnaires and interviews. Based on the data gathered, the researcher found several problems that needed to be solved, even though the teachers at the junior high school in Banda Aceh already had standard knowledge in teaching, especially in preparing lesson plans, but, they lacked the ability to implement their knowledge especially in teaching reading comprehension. Based on observations the researcher concluded that the methods and strategies generally applied by the teachers at the school were: Direct Method, Grammar Translation Method and Think Pair Share Method, which still required supervision. Therefore, the researcher hopes that this study can be continued by subsequent researchers in the future in order to provide more input for better implementation of methods in teaching English, especially for teaching reading comprehension.</text>

<text>This study aims at finding out the most difficult types of reading comprehension questions faced by students in reading tests and why they face these difficulties in the national examinations. Purposive sampling was used and the sample selected was 24 12th grade students of senior high school Lhokseumawe. The instruments used were a test, a questionnaire, and an interview guide. Based on the results from the test, the researcher found that the most difficult type of reading comprehension question faced by the students was an inference question, and this type of question was also classified into the difficult questions based on the index of difficulty formula. After analyzing the data from the questionnaire, it was found that most of students failed to answer the inference questions correctly because they did not fully understand what was being asked and because of weakness in understanding the reading comprehension questions. From the interview, the researcher found that the students had an inadequate knowledge of vocabulary and sentence structure but they lacked knowledge about different types of reading comprehension questions. It can be concluded that there were some factors that caused difficulties for the students in answering these tests. First, the students did not comprehend the questions asked due to their weaknesses in differentiating between the natures of different types of reading comprehension questions. Their difficulties were also influenced by their weaknesses in mastering a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures.</text>

<text>This study aims at finding out if the combination of the Inquiry (IQ), Learning Community (LC), and Total Physical Response (TPM) methods of teaching English will be able to improve the performance of the students’ English language skills. The study focuses on the students’ performance to verbally respond to simple instructions with acceptable actions within the context of the classroom and school environments and to give verbal expression for some simple acts: showing how to do something simple, gesticulating, and giving directions (as stated in KTSP or Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (School Based Curriculum or SBC) in Depdiknas, 2006). In terms of speaking skills, this study concentrates on the pronunciation and comprehension aspects. To achieve the goal of study, an experimental approach with one-group pre-test and post-test design was used. A number of 20 students out of a 58 student population were selected randomly as the sample for treatment. The results showed that the students’ comprehension and pronunciation improved significantly (from 34 to 60). In conclusion, the combination of IQ, LC and TPR of teaching did improve the ability of students to respond to simple instructions, and to express simple speech for giving simple directions, gesticulating, and showing how to do something simple. The hypothesis (Ha) of this research is then accepted as the combined teaching method generated greater ability in English than previous methods.</text>

<text>This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted to find out how KWL strategy is applied in English reading class and the students’ responses towards it. It was done in 2 cycles, in which each cycle consisted of planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflection. The instruments used in collecting the data were tests, observation sheets for the researcher and students, and questionnaires for the students. The results showed that KWL strategy gave better result in improving the students’ reading comprehension skills in finding out the main idea, detailed information, word meaning, and references. The results from tests showed that students’ mean score from pre-test was 62.8 and this increased to 68.2 at the end of cycle 1, and reached 80.4 at the end of cycle 2. Furthermore, the percentage of students’ participation in the teaching and learning process gradually increased. This is shown from the observation checklist where the percentage of students’ involvement is 57% (in the enough category) in cycle 1 and increased up to 80% (in the very good category) in cycle 2. It means that they worked well in conducting all activities. Furthermore, the results of questionnaire showed that 80% of the students responded positively towards the implementation of KWL. This strategy was found to help overcome problems encountered by teachers in getting the students to be more active to participate in the process of learning, expanding knowledge, learning about their needs and their interests, and activating their background knowledge.</text>

<text>The research was based on a preliminary study on the causes of problems related to the students’ inability to speak English. One of the research objectives is to describe the atmosphere in improving speaking by using activities in the Information Gap Technique (IGT). The researcher and the collaborator worked together in designing the lesson plans, implementing the actions, making observations and reflecting on the results. The subjects of this research study were second semester students from the English Department at Almuslim University. This study was conducted in three cycles following the procedures for action research, namely planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. To collect data, the researcher used instruments of observations, lists, tests and questionnaires. The data obtained was presented in two ways, qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings showed that IGT activities were effective in improving the speaking abilities of the student in class. This can be seen from the improvements after each cycle. This can be seen by the rise in the students’ mean scores in the test results: 58.8 in the first cycle, 68 in the second cycle and 81.3 in the third cycle. Improvement was also seen based on the results from the observations that showed positivity, and good responses from the students. From the questionnaire results, it was found that the mean score for the students’ perception was 3,616. This means that the students responded positively to the implementation of this technique.</text>

Each and every textbook has a number of potential strengths as well as limitations within its contents or its application in the teaching learning process. This research covers the analysis of several features of the New Cutting Edge Intermediate (NCEI) textbook and highlights a number of strong and weak points of this new textbook. In order to obtain the data for this study, the contents, layout and design, activities and tasks, grammar and skills presented in the textbook were scrutinized according to the School Based Curriculum (SBC) approach (Depdiknas, 2005), which is recently introduced into the Indonesian education system. More importantly, the distinctive approaches and principles underlying NCEI textbook design and also those of the SBC were analyzed to ascertain the extent of their compatibility.</text>

<text>Heavy metals have widespread industrial uses and have been found in increasing quantities as contaminants in all components of the biosphere. Water and sediment of rivers near industrial areas such as the Juru River in Penang and Langat River in Selangor are polluted with heavy metals. Thus, rapid and fast methods to detect the presence of heavy metals in the environment are necessary. Existing instrumental methods such as atomic absorption and emission spectrometry are very sensitive but the sole use of these instruments for heavy metal detection is extremely expensive, needs a skillful person to operate and is not amenable to near-real-time analysis. The best scenario for routine biomonitoring of heavy metals is the marriage between instrument- and bioassays. Currently, the USEPA has recognized whole cell-based bioassays such as as PolytoxTM and Microtox® for the detection of heavy metals. Unfortunately these cell-based assays cannot be used as real-time or near real-time assays in the field as they require bulky incubators. Near-real-time monitoring of heavy metals giving results in less than one hour is very useful in environmental CSI (Criminal Scene Investigation) or ECSI where temporal and spatial concentrations of heavy metals in running waters are a challenge to environmentalists to pinpoint heavy metals POS (point of source) for legal purposes. Enzyme-based inhibitive assays are simple, rapid and fast and could be developed for near real-time assays. We have developed an inhibitive assay system –Xenoassay® based on proteases for the assay of heavy metals. The system could detect the heavy metals mercury, cadmium, lead, copper, zinc and silver at the sub parts per million level. Field trial near-real-time assay capability shows promising results.</text>
