<text>Portfolios are one of the alternatives that can be used for writing assessment. Portfolios are not common in the curriculum. The lack of dissemination to language teachers have made portfolios disregarded. In order to encourage teachers to use portfolios for assessment of writing, they need to have adequate information about portfolios, how they can be used for assessment as well as the benefits of using them for assessment. This study discusses why teachers do not use portfolios for assessing writing done by senior high school students. It focuses on English teachers at Islamic senior high schools in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, and also looks at alternatives to help teachers use portfolios for assessment. The 26 teachers who participated in this study were given a questionnaire in order to find out their background knowledge related to portfolios and the difficulties they faced as teachers. Data from the questionnaire was supported by observations made by the researcher whilst monitoring their teaching. The results of this study showed that a large percentage of teachers found it difficult to design a rubric/set of instructions for using portfolios for writing assessment, whilst from the observation it was revealed that the complexities of correcting portfolios discouraged them from using portfolios as one of their means of assessment. </text>

<text>This study examines how negotiation of meaning contributes to second language interaction. The discussion in this study is based on Michael H. Long’s 1996 Interaction Hypothesis suggesting that environment contributes to the development of second language acquisition. Long proposes that environmental contributions to acquisition are mediated by selective attention and the learner’s processing capacity during negotiation for meaning. To support this belief, recent empirical studies are also presented in this article. Three negotiation for meaning strategies are discussed in this study to mirror and provide evidence for Long’s proposal, including several excerpts from conversations collected from daily natural conversations and other recorded sources. The strategies include (1) clarification requests, (2) confirmation checks, and (3) comprehension checks. The study has been able to prove that learner’s L2 acquisition takes advantage of environmental contributions mediated by selective attention and the learner’s developing L2 processing capacity brought together during negotiation of meaning.</text>

<text>This study examines the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique for improving students’ English writing skills, specifically in content and organization when focused on writing recount texts. This experimental research used random sampling and random assignment to determine the control group (CG) and the experimental group (EG). Pre- tests, treatment or teaching and post-tests were done to both groups. The study was conducted with 60 second year students from a junior high school in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Students’ mean scores for the pre-test in the CG were 40.76 and 60.76 for the post-test, meanwhile students’ mean scores for the pre-test in the EG were 40 and 72.69 for the post-test. Thus, the t-test between both groups was 9.39 and the t-table was 2.056 which used 0.05 as the level of significance for this research. Because the t-test value was higher than the t-table (9.39 > 2.056), Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Therefore, the CIRC technique can improve the content and organization of students’ writing in doing recount texts. In addition, because students work in groups, they have more opportunity to learn and share their ideas with other students to produce better writing.</text>

<text>Writing is a means of communication to convey meaning as well as a medium for self-expression and self assessment and also for teacher-assessment. In the tertiary context, writing even has more complex meanings because of its social context and epistemological issues of knowledge. This study was conducted to identify errors and mistakes made in free-writing by students at STKIP Bina Bangsa Getsempena and to investigate the reasons they faced numerous difficulties in producing good free-writing as well as to investigate the students’ opinions towards the activity of writing in general and also the comments of their lecturers on their free-writing assignments. 18 free-writing assignments were collected from 18 students as samples for this study. A questionnaire was also distributed to strengthen the data obtained from the writings. The written assignments were then analyzed by using the form feedback framework, in terms of conventional grammatical errors, adapted from Ashwell (2000). The findings showed 6 categories of grammar that were often misused in the students’ free-writing, namely agreement/verb-tense, spelling, articles/determiners/plurals, lexical choice, pronoun and preposition/collocation. The results from the questionnaires revealed that the main obstacles faced by the students in producing free-writing were their lack of ideas/difficulties in organizing ideas as well as their problems with grammar.</text>

<text>This study was to investigate the types of sentence errors and their frequency made by first grade students from a high school in Banda Aceh in their writing of English. The participants for this study were 44 first graders chosen by random sampling. The research method used was quantitative as the data was analyzed with a statistical procedure. The data was obtained from written tests for a descriptive text entitled “My school” of 120-140 word length. This study found that three out of four sentence errors in the students’ writing were fragmented sentences whilst nearly a quarter of the errors were run-on or comma splice sentences. There were only a few choppy sentence errors and no stringy sentence errors. The data revealed five types of fragmented sentences: these were the absence of a subject, the absence of a verb, the absence of both a subject and a verb, the absence of a verb in a dependent clause, and the absence of an independent clause.</text>

<text>Formal teaching is an intentional activity that requires teachers to have beliefs and experiences. Teachers’ beliefs are defined by Johnson (1994) as something that is formed early in life as a result of a person’s education and experience. Strong beliefs about learning and teaching are well established by the time a student completes schooling. This study intends to find out the beliefs of teachers of English at junior and senior high schools in Aceh. The study surveyed three qualified teachers as participants (in which one is also a vice-principal of his school) and used 15 questions to ascertain their techniques, beliefs and career paths. The results show that teachers’ beliefs are related to the teaching methodologies that they use. According to the teachers’ beliefs, the teaching methodologies should be varied from time by time according to the situation and the curriculum. Besides, each participant has committed to a career in the teaching profession persistently despite facing many obstacles and challenges during teaching and learning. The participants dreamt of being teachers since they were children. The authors suggest other researchers might see applications of this research for studying the benefits and weaknesses of different teaching methodologies based on teachers’ beliefs. </text>

This research aims to; (1) figure out the class level of the cocoa land suitability of the people in Simeulue regency, (2) specifies one or more factors determining the level of cocoa productivity of the people in Simeulue regency, (3) and clarify the relationship of the land characteristics, land productivity and cocoa bean quality in Simeulue regency. The study was conducted in Simeulue regency from May to August 2011. The suitability classification method developed by FAO combined to the criteria drafted out by Coffee and Cocoa Research Center Indonesia was adapted in this research. The land suitability evaluation started by determining the tread observation which was set in the cocoa farm. The result suggests the actual class level of the land suitability for cacao in Simeulue regency consists of class S3 (marginally suitable) with the major barrier factor is the high rainfall. Location altitude shows a significant negative correlation to the soil effective depth, clay fraction, pH H2O, C-organic, N-total, Na-exchange, Ca-exchange, Al-exchange, H-exchange, CEC and base saturation. The slope of the site suggests a significant negative correlation to the soil effective depth, silt fraction, clay fraction, pH H2O, C-organic, N-total, P-avilable, Na-exchange, Ca-exchange, Mg-exchange, CEC and base saturation. The soil effective depth indicates a significant negative correlation to the silt fraction, pH H2O, C-organic, N-total, P-avilable, K-exchange, Na-exchange, H-exchange, CEC and base saturation. In addition to the altitude and slope of the location, characteristics of the land that affecting cocoa productivity and quality are the effective depth, C-organic, N-total, H-exchange, CEC, silt fraction, K-exchange and Ca-exchange.</text>
