Description
This chapter examines the pedagogical integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools—particularly generative systems such as ChatGPT—into argumentative writing instruction for university EFL learners. It conceptualizes AI not as a replacement for human cognition but as a scaffold that enhances learners’ ideation, linguistic refinement, and rhetorical coherence. A three-stage instructional model is proposed: AI-assisted brainstorming and outlining, AI-supported drafting and revision, and peer-based evaluation without AI intervention. Through this sequenced design, students are guided to critically engage with AI-generated texts, maintain authorial integrity, and develop metacognitive awareness of their writing process. Ethical issues such as plagiarism, overreliance, and authenticity are also discussed, emphasizing the need for balanced pedagogical frameworks that align technological affordances with academic integrity. The chapter concludes that AI-supported writing, when mediated by reflective and ethical practices, can foster autonomy, critical judgment, and creativity among EFL writers in higher education.
